Development

The foundation for this website was laid at the end of 2003. The statistics of the official FC Groningen website were used. After a restyle in form and functionality, FC Groningen made contact in early 2005 for a possible cooperation. Since that time, FCG Stats and FC Groningen have had a unique collaboration. As a result, all statistics of official FC Groningen matches are publicly and interactively available. This makes FCG Stats unique in the Netherlands.

A plan of action was then drawn up and, in addition to the information already available, information such as trainers, half-time standings, line-ups, substitutes, minutes played, assists, yellow & red cards and penalty kicks was added. For this information, until 1996, use was mainly made of the extensive and complete archive of Gerard Kuilman, which was previously acquired and in the past formed the basis for the 25th anniversary book of FC Groningen published in 1996.

By 2023, the site has undergone a major overhaul. For instance, all existing data has been transferred to a new data model and the page is also easy to read on mobile devices. The new data model allows us to collect even more and even better data. For instance, players can have multiple nationalities but we can also capture opponent data. And from that, we can extract very nice statistics.

In 2025, FCG Stats was expanded to include the matches of FC Groningen's women's team, which then made its debut in professional football and joined the second division. For these matches, too, all statistics are now carefully maintained and accessed in the same way. This makes it possible to view line-ups, goal scorers and the match progress of the women's team in full. All statistics of the women's team can be found on a separate environment via vrouwen.fcgstats.nl.
